MULTIPRESS designs and manufactures a variety of customizable hydraulic presses. 4-post hydraulic presses, also known as 4-column presses, can be designed to accommodate dies of any size and are well suited for part manufacturing that requires superior rigidity and precise bed-to-ram parallelism.
4-Post style presses are most commonly found in the 20 to 1,200 ton capacity, as requirements beyond that would generally call for a different style of press, such as a straight side or column press. 4-post presses are advantageous because they are typically more economical than gib-guided presses and allow four-sided access to the working area. A typical configuration may be designed with:
- Multiple posts (4-post is most common)
- With or without moving platens
- Heated platens
- Cushion or knock-out
- Bolster plate
While we offer several “standard” press sizes and options, MULTIPRESS regularly builds customized models based on individual client applications and production requirements. 4-post presses lend themselves well to a wide variety of customizations and can easily be built to order based on specific application or production needs. Some typical customizations include:
- T-slots
- Daylight
- Ejectors
- Cushions
Our experienced engineering staff partners closely with clients to ensure their press is built to their exact specifications. MULTIPRESS equipment is built with rugged, heavy-duty construction, designed to meet demanding production schedules with years of trouble-free operation.
When to use a 4-Post Press
4-post presses are favored by manufacturers who have applications where larger dies are required, as the 4-post design can be expanded as needed. The 4-post design is also ideal when the platens need to be perfectly parallel through the stroke, as the design means it will not suffer from gapping and provides completely even pressure. Other press types such as gap or c-frame may be acceptable for applications where prefect parallelism is not necessary.
Differences Between 4-Post Press Tonnages
MULTIPRESS 4-post presses can be designed and built to accommodate smaller loads, such as a 30 ton model. These models, which occupy a smaller footprint are designed with heavy-duty plate construction. Machines on the larger side, such as a 1,000 or 1,200 ton model, occupy a larger machine footprint would be built with a robust weldment construction. No matter the size of press, MULTIPRESS equipment is always built with our signature rugged, heavy duty construction, designed to meet demanding production schedules with years of trouble-free operation.
4-Post Presses for Versatility
4-Post presses are available with multiple axes to provide greater versatility in the manufacturing process. For example, the 4-post design allows for “through production” meaning parts can be loaded in the front of the press and removed from the back if the workflow requires it.
Examples of some of axes that could be included in a MULTIPRESS press are:
Upper cushion and/or ejector action
Hold down platen, which holds tension on material to prevent material from wrinkling in the draw process
Punch action
A lower cylinder can be used a cushion/ejector or punch to reverse draw material
